Understanding the Writing Task and Rubric

Slide 1 of 13
An adult in an empty exam room writes on a blank sheet, a second blank page beside it, beneath a large round wall clock
One page, one position, about seventy-five minutes.

One task, 75 minutes: that is the whole test

A lot of test-takers picture the CAEC Writing test as a stack of grammar questions: circle the right comma, fix the run-on. That is not how it works.

There are no multiple-choice questions on the Writing test at all.

Instead, you write one persuasive piece in about 75 minutes. You are given an issue, you take a clear position, and you argue for it.

Very often the task takes the form of a letter or email to a real audience like a town council or an employer.

Everything in this course's Writing units, including the practice questions, is a training aid for that single essay. The questions here build your skills; the real test asks you to use them in one piece of writing.

Key pointThe practice items in this course are for learning; the actual test has no multiple-choice writing section.
