Short answer: the sign-up process is online everywhere, the test itself is delivered on a digital platform, and whether you can write it from home or need to visit a testing centre depends on your province or territory. Here is how it breaks down.
Registration: online, everywhere
No matter where you live, you create a candidate account on the official CAEC digital platform, select your province or territory, and register from home. Fees and local details appear once you choose your location. We covered the province-by-province picture in our registration guide.
The test: digital platform, delivery varies
The CAEC is administered in both digital and paper formats, and provinces run it through their own providers. In practice that means:
- Testing centres are the standard route. In most provinces you book each subject test at an approved centre and write it there, usually on a computer, sometimes on paper.
- Some provinces highlight online delivery. Newfoundland and Labrador, for example, announced that its CAEC testing is delivered on an online platform. Options like remote or supervised online writing depend entirely on your local provider.
- Accommodations are supported through the platform and your provider if you qualify.
Because delivery rules are set provincially and continue to evolve, the only reliable answer for your situation comes from your provincial provider. Check their page, or simply start registration and see which options your province shows you.
Either way, prepare the same way
Whether you end up at a testing centre or on a screen at home, the test content is identical: five subjects, 55% to pass each. The preparation that works is also identical, learn the material, practise under time, and review what you miss.
