The CAEC Is Free in Saskatchewan: Help With Everything Else
No test fee, up to three attempts a year, and extra money while you upgrade
· 4 min read
Good news first: Saskatchewan charges no fee to write the CAEC. The province’s CAEC page says it in one line: “There is no fee to write the tests.”
So in Saskatchewan, financial help is not about the test. It is about the weeks of preparation around it. Here is what exists, checked against Government of Saskatchewan pages in September 2026.
Who can write for free
- You live in Saskatchewan.
- You have not completed high school or the GED.
- You are 18. If you are 17, you can ask for an exemption using the Age Waiver Request Form.
Register by creating a candidate account on the CAEC website, choosing Saskatchewan, and booking a session at an approved testing centre. If you have questions, the province’s CAEC line is 306-787-5597.
Retakes are free, but limited
You can write each subject once a month, up to three times in a calendar year. Retakes cost nothing, but that limit is the real price of walking in unprepared: a failed attempt uses one of your three chances and pushes your next try back at least a month.
Extra money while you upgrade: the Education and Training Incentive
If you receive Saskatchewan Income Support (SIS) or Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability (SAID) and enrol full-time in an approved program such as Adult Basic Education, the Education and Training Incentive adds a monthly amount on top of your income assistance:
- $50 a month for a single adult without children or dependants
- $100 a month for a family with one child
- $200 a month for a family with two or more children
It is a living allowance, not help with tuition, and it comes with conditions: you study full-time and keep an attendance rate of at least 90 per cent, with accommodations possible for a disability.
How to apply: contact a training provider to enrol in an approved program. If you are not already on income assistance, you can apply to SIS or SAID, and the training provider’s staff can help you with the application. For questions, the Ministry of Social Services Client Service Centre is at 1-866-221-5200.
Free study material from the province
Saskatchewan points learners to CAEC preparation materials on its edonline.sk.ca platform, alongside free sample tests by subject and the test outcomes for each subject on the official CAEC site. The outcomes tell you exactly what each test measures, so start with the ones for your weakest subject.
If you have a diagnosed condition that needs accommodations, request them with your documentation at least 60 days before your test.
If you are First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
The federal Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program (ISET) funds training through local Indigenous organizations across Canada, and it includes urban and non-affiliated Indigenous people. Each organization decides what it supports, so ask yours directly what it can cover for CAEC preparation and testing. The government keeps a directory of these organizations by province and territory.
A plan for Saskatchewan
- Check that you qualify, and create your candidate account.
- Take a free sample test to find your weakest subject.
- If you receive SIS or SAID and want structured classes, ask a training provider about full-time Adult Basic Education and the incentive.
- Book each subject when timed practice is comfortably above 55%, so you do not spend one of your three attempts finding out.
Practise between classes
Whatever help you line up, practice is what gets you through the tests. The CAEC Ready course has a free demo with one full topic in every subject, and our video walkthroughs are free.
