CAEC Retake Fees and Rescore Costs

· 4 min read

The CAEC is structured so that each subject test is completed separately. If you pass four subjects but fall below the passing score in one area, you normally only need to retake the subject that was not passed, not the entire exam.

This allows you to focus your studying on the specific subject that needs improvement.

There is usually a fee to retake a test, and the amount can vary depending on the province and the testing centre administering the exam.

For example:

  • Ontario: After completing your first attempt, the fee to rewrite unsuccessful tests is $100, even if you only need to retake one subject.
  • Alberta: Some testing centres charge about $80 per subject test, although the exact fee can depend on the testing location and proctoring costs.

Most jurisdictions also limit how frequently tests can be retaken. In many cases, a subject test can be retaken once per calendar month, up to three times per year, although policies may vary.

Can You Request a CAEC Rescore?

If you believe your score does not accurately reflect your performance, some jurisdictions allow you to request a rescore of the writing exam.

For example:

  • Alberta: You may request a rescore of the English Writing test for a fee, and the revised score becomes the official result even if it is lower than the original.

Machine-scored tests such as Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are typically not eligible for rescoring because they are graded automatically.
